During Second World War Milos’ occupation Germans and locals were capable of establishing basic relations of exchange beyond their obvious conflicting positions.Somehow banal human interactions and exchange of goods fostered occupation legitimization turning exception into perceived normality. During the Refuge Project residency and exhibition we defined ourself as international tourist and we acknowledged our common roots as occupiers.

“Normalization can be understood as a process by which normal relations are manufactured in a context of abnormal circumstances”.

Separating the colonizer from its own acts of aggression, means treating it as a political subject that is somehow independent of its political actions.

Normalization is therefore the primary mechanism used to overcome the contradictions inherent in the conflict in all its dimensions. Resolving the problems throughout occupier/occupied personal relations, distracts the debate from the heart of the problem: the occupation itself.

Reading those interactions trough Hannah Arendt’s eyes, what might seem as acting the lesser evil becomes the criminal device to accustom to wickedness.

Who elects the lesser evil easily forgets to have taken side in favor of the evil itself.

What kind of non-hypocritical relationship can nowadays exist between tourist occupiers and local occupied?

What kind of genuine interchange can a love and hate relationship reveal?

What kind of hidden interactions does commercial exchange disclose?

How are locals responsible of their colonized status?

How are they turned into collaborators?

Who are nowadays colonial tourism mediators?

Are locals simply subjected to or do they have an active role in the occupation?

What strategies do occupiers adopt in order to be legitimized?

What are colonization’s outposts?

What are nowadays’ acts of civil insubordination?
